BN-RV64 | The modern day pop rivet system was invented in Scotland just before World War I. Pop rivets are reliable and really useful in fastening two pieces of material together with relative ease. The main advantage of using a pop rivet is that only one side of the joining process needs to be accessed. This is where the concept of a "blind rivet" comes from. A pop rivet consists of two parts - the mandrel (or nail) and the actual body. The mandrel fits inside of the hollow body. Using a tool that attaches to the end of the mandrel, when pulled, it actually expands the body on the opposite side forcing it to mushroom together locking the two pieces being joined. In doing this, there comes a point of force that actually breaks the mandrel at the tip of the fastening tool. The size of a pop rivet is really determined by its body diameter. The length of the rivet body is measured from the underside of the rivet head to the end of the body. This in turn determines the actual thickness of material to be joined together. The minimum grip length must be equal to the combined thickness of the pieces being joined plus an amount equal to the rivet diameter.
